FOUR PAWS launches 67 Kennels of Hope campaign for Mandela Day

As Mandela Day approaches on 18 July, FOUR PAWS South Africa is calling on South Africans to help improve the lives of dogs in vulnerable communities through its annual 67 Kennels of Hope campaign.

The nationwide initiative aims to raise support to fund 67 kennels and care packages for dogs living in under-resourced communities across South Africa.

Campaign supports dogs in vulnerable communities

In partnership with Mdzananda Animal Clinic in Khayelitsha, the campaign will provide:

  • Safe kennels
  • Food
  • Shelter
  • Essential care supplies
  • Support for vulnerable animals

The initiative is inspired by Nelson Mandela’s legacy of service, compassion and community action.

Animal welfare organisations face growing pressure

According to FOUR PAWS South Africa, many animal welfare organisations continue facing mounting pressure as demand for assistance grows in underserved communities.

The organisation says many companion animals still lack:

  • Adequate shelter
  • Proper nutrition
  • Veterinary care
  • Safe living conditions

The issue was recently highlighted during the State of Animal Welfare Address held in May 2026.

Mandela Day campaign builds on previous success stories

The campaign follows previous Mandela Day initiatives that delivered practical support to pet owners and animals in need.

One example involved a local grandmother in Khayelitsha who rescued abandoned puppies despite having limited resources herself.

With the help of a donated kennel, she was able to protect the animals from harsh weather conditions and provide them with a safer environment.

FOUR PAWS says the story reflects how community compassion can make a meaningful difference when supported with practical resources.

FOUR PAWS calls on South Africans to get involved

Fiona Miles, Director at FOUR PAWS South Africa, says Mandela Day serves as a reminder that collective action can create real change.

“Through 67 Kennels of Hope, we invite every South African to take action by giving what they can to help provide safety and dignity to dogs in need,” says Miles.

“Real change happens when communities come together with compassion and purpose.”

How donations will help

Funds and resources raised through the campaign will directly contribute towards:

  • Building kennels
  • Feeding vulnerable dogs
  • Providing care supplies
  • Supporting community animal welfare efforts

FOUR PAWS says the campaign aims to create long-term impact while encouraging a more compassionate society.

South Africans interested in supporting the initiative can find more information via FOUR PAWS South Africa.
