How Dancers Love Dogs raised R9 million for animal welfare

What started with the rescue of a severely emaciated puppy has grown into one of South Africa’s most impactful animal welfare fundraising initiatives.

Founded in 2011 by dancer, teacher, choreographer and entrepreneur Brigitte Reeve-Taylor, Dancers Love Dogs (DLD) was established with a single mission: to raise funds exclusively for the sterilisation of dogs and other animals in need.

Over the past 15 years, the organisation has helped address animal overpopulation while supporting communities across South Africa through sustainable sterilisation programmes.

More than R9 million raised for animal welfare

Since its inception, Dancers Love Dogs has raised more than R9 million and funded the sterilisation of over 31,000 animals.

The organisation remains focused on its long-term vision of establishing sustainable spay-and-neuter programmes in remote communities across South Africa.

By tackling animal overpopulation, DLD helps reduce the abandonment, neglect and suffering of dogs and cats.

As both a registered Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) and Public Benefit Organisation (PBO), the organisation relies heavily on its annual performances to generate funding for its work.

Each ticket sold contributes directly towards a sterilisation procedure, offered at a reduced rate by veterinarians who continue to support the initiative.

Expanding its impact across South Africa

Over the past three years, Brigitte’s partnership with the National Sterilization Project has enabled Dancers Love Dogs to expand its reach nationally.

This collaboration has allowed the organisation to support sterilisation programmes in some of the country’s most remote communities.

Gala show returns in 2026

Speaking to Pet Pals magazine, Brigitte said supporters can look forward to another memorable fundraising event this year.

“Dancers Love Dogs supporters can once again look forward to a truly exceptional Gala Show this year. With the brilliant Alan Committie as our MC, and outstanding contributions from Cape Town’s leading dance companies and elite studios, the evening promises to be both spectacular and deeply meaningful.

“Every performance supports our foundation and the vital work we do, making the event not only unforgettable, but impactful. As always, we remain committed to delivering the highest quality entertainment, year after year.”

Recognition for a lifetime of giving back

Brigitte’s dedication to animal welfare has earned widespread recognition.

In 2016, she was named Glamour magazine’s Woman of the Year in The Generous Spirit category in recognition of her philanthropy and commitment to improving animal welfare in South Africa.

She also serves as an ambassador for the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa.
