As South Africans prepare to celebrate Take Your Dog to Work Day on 26 June 2026, global animal welfare organisation FOUR PAWS is encouraging pet owners and employers to put animal wellbeing first.
While the annual initiative offers a chance to celebrate the special bond between people and their dogs, experts say not every dog will enjoy spending the day in an office environment.
Not Every Dog Enjoys the Office
According to Fiona Miles, Director at FOUR PAWS South Africa, every dog responds differently to new environments.
“While many dogs enjoy new environments, not every dog will feel comfortable in an office setting. Owners must recognise their pet’s limits and prioritise their wellbeing above all else,” says Miles.
Busy workplaces can expose dogs to unfamiliar sounds, smells, people and routines, which may be exciting for some pets but stressful for others.
Understanding Your Dog’s Needs
Before taking a dog to work, owners should consider their pet’s temperament, health and previous experiences.
Some dogs adapt easily to social environments, while others may become anxious or overwhelmed.
FOUR PAWS recommends paying attention to subtle signs that a dog may need a break, including:
- Restlessness
- Excessive panting
- Seeking quiet spaces
- Withdrawal from people or activity
- Signs of anxiety or discomfort
“Responsible participation is about knowing your dog and supporting them in a way that makes them feel safe and secure,” adds Miles.
Tips for a Dog-Friendly Workplace
For offices planning to participate, a few simple measures can help ensure the day remains enjoyable for both pets and people.
Bring the Right Dogs
Only dogs that are comfortable around people and other animals should attend.
Create a Quiet Space
Provide an area where dogs can relax away from busy workspaces when they need downtime.
Keep Essentials Nearby
Make sure dogs have access to:
- Fresh drinking water
- Familiar bedding
- Toys or comfort items
- Their normal feeding routine
Schedule Regular Breaks
Dogs should have opportunities to:
- Stretch their legs
- Go outside regularly
- Take bathroom breaks
- Enjoy short walks during the day
Respect Colleagues
Employers should remain mindful of colleagues who may have allergies, fears or different comfort levels around animals.

FOUR PAWS says participation does not have to mean bringing a pet into the office. Some owners may choose to work from home, adjust their schedules or simply spend extra quality time with their pets instead.
