Best pet-friendly flooring for homes with dogs and cats

Homes with pets place flooring under daily pressure.

There are dogs racing through the lounge, wet coats after a swim, cats sprinting down passages and the occasional accident on the rug.

The right flooring makes cleaning easier and reduces damage. The wrong choice scratches, absorbs odours and becomes expensive to replace.

Here are three flooring options suited to homes with dogs and cats, plus five details to consider before installation.

Luxury vinyl plank

Luxury vinyl plank is a strong all-round option for homes with pets.

It is waterproof, scratch-resistant and easy to clean. Its softer surface feels warmer underfoot than tile and reduces the sound of claws moving across the floor.

Luxury vinyl plank comes in solid colours and finishes designed to resemble wood.

For regular cleaning, use a microfibre broom or mop, water and a suitable laminate cleaner.

Porcelain or ceramic tiles

Porcelain and ceramic tiles resist scratches, water and odours. They suit homes with active pets and are easy to clean after muddy paws or toilet accidents.

The main drawbacks are temperature, hardness and traction. Tiles feel cold and become slippery, which creates problems for older dogs and cats.

Grout also needs attention. Light-coloured grout stains easily, while liquids and odours seep into poorly maintained joins.

Place non-slip runners along busy routes and provide orthopaedic beds in rooms where your pet sleeps.

High-quality laminate flooring

Modern laminate flooring offers better scratch resistance than older products. An AC5-rated, 12 mm option suits high-traffic areas and feels warmer than tile.

Standard laminate is water-resistant rather than waterproof. Water or urine left in the click joints enters between the planks, causing swelling and raised edges.

Replacing one damaged plank is also difficult once the floor has been installed.

Choose a waterproof laminate or Aqua Seal range for a home with pets. Clean spills and accidents as soon as they happen.

Five pet-proofing details to consider

  1. Choose the right underlay

Install a high-density, moisture-blocking underlay.

It reduces noise, adds warmth and protects the floor against moisture from the subfloor.

  1. Pick a matt finish

High-gloss surfaces show scratches, paw marks and pet hair more easily.

Textured, low-sheen finishes in light oak or grey hide hair and minor marks better. Dark flooring makes pale pet hair more noticeable.

  1. Trim your dog’s nails

Trim your dog’s nails every two to three weeks.

Long nails increase scratching and create a constant clicking sound on hard floors. No flooring is fully scratch-proof when exposed to long claws.

  1. Use a suitable cleaner

Avoid vinegar and bleach on luxury vinyl plank and laminate flooring because they damage the sealant.

Use an enzyme cleaner on pet accidents. A pH-neutral floor cleaner is suitable for routine mopping.

  1. Add traction in busy areas

Place washable runners along routes where your dog often runs.

Focus on entrances, passages and the areas around food and water bowls. These runners improve grip and protect sections exposed to frequent wear.

Which pet-friendly floor should you choose?

Luxury vinyl plank offers a practical balance of water resistance, warmth, comfort and easy cleaning.

Tiles provide strong protection against scratches and moisture, but need rugs and pet beds to improve warmth and traction.

Laminate works in pet-friendly homes when you select a waterproof range and clean accidents quickly.

Your final choice should reflect your pets’ ages, activity levels and habits, as well as the amount of cleaning and maintenance you want to manage.
