Dogs process human fear and sadness differently, brain scans show

Dog owners often notice how their pets respond to changes in mood.

When you cry, your dog might rest its chin on your knee. When you hear a strange noise and become frightened, the same dog might sit upright and bark towards the door.

A study published in iScience on 10 August 2026 suggests these responses are linked to the way dogs process human emotions in their brains.

How researchers studied the dogs

Neuroscientist Raúl Hernández-Pérez and his team at the University of Vienna trained dogs to remain still inside a functional magnetic resonance imaging scanner.

The dogs were awake and received no sedation.

While inside the scanner, they looked at images of human faces showing fear, sadness and anger.

Researchers used machine learning to study activity across the dogs’ brains.

Dogs recognised fear as a separate emotion

Different brain regions responded to different negative emotions.

Dogs used the right rostral suprasylvian gyrus to distinguish fear from sadness. This region is involved in processing faces and social cues.

They relied on a separate network to distinguish fear from anger. This included the right mid ectosylvian gyrus and the left splenial gyrus.

The scans did not show a clear distinction between anger and sadness.

Fear, though, produced a different response from both emotions.

What the findings suggest

The results suggest dogs recognise more than whether a person feels happy or unhappy.

Their brains appear to place fear in a separate emotional category, which might trigger a different response.

Other research suggests dogs respond more quickly and experience a greater increase in heart rate when exposed to fear and anger than sadness.

Fear and anger might signal an immediate threat. Sadness does not carry the same urgent warning.

The study involved a small group of dogs

The two parts of the study involved groups of eight and 12 dogs.

The sample was small, but the findings offer possible evidence that dogs form different neural representations of human emotions.

Their responses involve several brain regions working together rather than one emotional centre.

Dogs use more than their eyesight

The researchers acknowledged that showing dogs pictures of human faces was a human-centred way to test them.

Dogs assess emotions through several senses.

These include:

  • Smell: Even hand-raised wolves respond differently to the smell of human fear sweat and happy sweat.
  • Voice: Dogs notice the high, tense and fast voice people often use when frightened.
  • Body language: They respond to posture, breathing rate and changes in how much space a person occupies.

Dogs therefore gather emotional information from the way people look, sound, smell and move.

Learning to understand your dog

Dogs have spent 30,000 years learning to interpret human behaviour.

Their responses to fear and sadness suggest they understand more about our emotions than we often realise.

The findings also offer dog owners a reason to pay closer attention to the signals their pets use to communicate in return.
