His name means king, but for 1,222 days, Mufasa has had no kingdom of his own.
No couch. No permanent family. No place to finally call home.
Instead, much of his life has been spent at TEARS Animal Rescue, where he is deeply loved by the people caring for him, but everyone is waiting for the day a family finally chooses him.
At three years old, this pit bull has already spent more than half his life waiting in kennels.
Now, after undergoing surgery on both his back legs and moving temporarily into foster care while he recovers, Mufasa needs one final move.
This time, to his forever home.
Meet Mufasa, a pit bull with a heart of gold
Mufasa is a handsome boy with soft eyes, a deep amber pit bull smile and a wag that takes over his whole body when he’s happy.
The TEARS team says he loves fiercely once he trusts you.
New people make him cautious, so expect a little shyness when you first meet him. Give him 10 minutes and a gentle voice, though, and his personality starts to emerge.
The shy boy comes closer for kisses, his tail starts wagging and before long he is leaning his entire weight into you for cuddles.
Mufasa loves scenic walks, splashing in water and joyful bursts of zoomies around the garden.
TEARS describes him as gentle, affectionate and eager to please.
He thrives in a calm, patient home where love is consistent and bonds have time to grow slowly and deeply.
He isn’t a chaotic dog. He’s a soulful one.
The type of dog who picks his person and loves them with his whole heart.
After spending so much of his life in kennels, he deserves a softer life.
The boy who kept going
Mufasa’s body hasn’t had an easy journey either.
He was born with luxating patella, a condition where a dog or cat’s kneecap slips out of its normal groove in the thighbone.
More recently, he underwent surgery after suffering cruciate ligament injuries.
But Mufasa kept going.
Thanks to a TEARS volunteer who fundraised for his surgeries, he has now had both back legs operated on and is recovering in a loving foster home.
His foster placement, however, is temporary.
What Mufasa needs now isn’t another move between temporary homes. He needs his last home.
A place where he can finish healing and never have to leave again.
Mufasa needs someone to choose him
According to the National Council of SPCAs, shelters and rescue groups across South Africa face an overwhelming surplus of surrendered and abandoned pit bulls.
Mufasa has already spent more than half his life waiting.
He deserves a family.
He deserves a soft bed.
And, after 1,222 days, he deserves somewhere he finally belongs.
Mufasa is currently being cared for in a foster home through TEARS Animal Rescue in Cape Town and is available for adoption.
TEARS will provide his new family with full guidance on his recovery and post-operative care.
The adoption fee is R1,200.
