Cats might have a reputation for being independent and aloof, but that doesn’t mean they don’t love their humans. They simply have their own ways of showing affection.
Unlike dogs, cats tend to be more subtle about their feelings. A gentle headbutt, a quiet purr or a habit of following you around the house could all be signs that your feline friend feels safe and happy around you.

1. They greet you at the door
Does your cat meet you at the door with their tail held high and a little hook at the end, almost like a question mark?
Perhaps they weave between your legs as you walk inside.
This is their way of greeting you and showing they’re happy to see you.
Of course, they might also be reminding you that their food bowl is empty. Either way, it’s a warm welcome!
2. They give you headbutts
That gentle little bonk against your chin, cheek or hand isn’t just adorable. It’s also a way for your cat to claim you as part of their family.
Cats have scent glands on their cheeks. When they rub their heads against you, they’re leaving their scent behind.
Think of it as your cat’s way of saying you belong together.
3. They knead you with their paws
Ever noticed your cat rhythmically pressing their paws into your lap or a soft blanket?
Often called making biscuits, this behaviour begins during kittenhood, when kittens knead their mothers while feeding.
If your adult cat kneads you, they’re displaying a behaviour associated with comfort and contentment.
It’s their happy place, even if those little claws sometimes make the experience less comfortable for you!
4. They show you their belly
When your cat rolls onto their back and exposes their belly, they’re showing you one of their most vulnerable areas.
It’s a sign that they feel safe and trust you.
However, there’s an important distinction: showing you their belly doesn’t necessarily mean they want you to rub it.
Admire the display of trust, but approach belly rubs with caution!
5. They follow you everywhere
Does your cat follow you from the kitchen to the lounge and even into the bathroom?
You might have a feline shadow.
Cats that choose to follow their humans from room to room often simply want to be wherever their favourite person is.
They might not always demand attention, but your company matters to them.
6. They talk to you
Those little chirps, short meows and other vocal greetings are another way cats communicate with their humans.
Cats use meowing as a form of communication with people, developing their own ways of getting our attention.
Whether they’re greeting you, asking for something or simply making conversation, those familiar sounds are part of your relationship.
7. They purr when they’re around you
A contented cat curled up beside you, purring away, is one of the most familiar signs of feline happiness.
However, purring doesn’t always mean a cat is relaxed.
Pay attention to the rest of their body language. Tense ears or a rapidly swishing tail alongside purring could indicate anxiety.
A relaxed body and a gentle purr are more reassuring signs that your cat is comfortable.
8. They sleep near you or on you
Cats are particularly vulnerable when they’re asleep.
If your cat chooses to curl up on your lap, settle beside you or sleep nearby, they’re showing that they feel safe in your presence.
Being trusted enough to share their sleeping space is a lovely compliment from an animal that values its security.
9. They bring you gifts
Finding a toy mouse at your feet is one thing. Discovering a real one is quite another!
But when your cat brings you something they’ve caught or a toy they treasure, they’re sharing something important to them.
It might not be the kind of gift you’d choose for yourself, but it’s one of those unmistakably feline ways of showing affection.

Not every cat will display all nine behaviours. Some are naturally affectionate and vocal, while others prefer to show their attachment from a comfortable distance.
The important thing is to recognise the little ways your cat chooses to connect with you.
