In celebration of World Spay Day on 25 February, the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa has partnered with TEARS Animal Rescue, AFRIPAW and TAH to sterilise, vaccinate and microchip more than 350 cats and dogs.
The campaign will serve the communities of Vrygrond, Hillview, Seawinds and Lavender Hill.
Three-Day Outreach Campaign
The large-scale outreach runs from Monday, 23 February to Wednesday, 25 February, aligning with World Spay Day. The global initiative unites veterinary practices and animal welfare organisations to promote responsible pet ownership and reduce pet overpopulation.
Organisers expect the intervention to deliver a lasting impact in beneficiary communities, where residents have shown strong support for the project.
Collaboration Drives Impact
Allan Perrins, spokesperson for the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa, chaired the recent planning meeting and thanked the teams behind the initiative.
“This project would not be possible without the commitment of our veterinarians, para-veterinary professionals, dedicated support staff and volunteers,” said Perrins. “Their expertise and efforts are instrumental to the success of this campaign.”
He emphasised that sterilisation remains the most humane and cost-effective way to regulate pet populations, reduce homelessness and prevent cruelty.
Call For Public Support
Perrins confirmed he will personally cover the cost of the first pet sterilised during the campaign. He encouraged Cape Town pet owners and the City of Cape Town to contribute to the campaign’s costs.
Public, business and stakeholder support will allow operational teams to focus on delivering essential services in under-resourced communities.
Organisers believe the long-term social and animal welfare benefits significantly outweigh the financial investment and are urging broader community participation.
