Dog lovers and their four-legged companions will take to the coast for a feel-good fundraiser in support of animal care. The eighth annual Paws on the Promenade returns this April, bringing together the community for a scenic walk along one of Cape Town’s most loved routes.
Hosted by Mdzananda Animal Clinic in partnership with Vondi’s Holistic Pet Nutrition, the event raises funds to support vital veterinary services in Khayelitsha.
A walk with purpose
The dog walk takes place on Sunday, 12 April at 9am. The route starts at the Mouille Point lighthouse and stretches 5km to the Sea Point swimming pool and back. Shorter turnaround options are available for older pets or those needing a gentler pace.
Last year’s event drew close to 300 dogs and raised R37 500 on a modest budget. Organisers aim to grow that impact this year as funding pressures increase.
The clinic currently treats around 22 000 animals each year. Services include consultations, surgeries, sterilisations, mobile clinics and an animal ambulance. Community education also plays a key role in promoting responsible pet ownership.
A recent funding setback has increased urgency. The organisation faces a loss of R250 000 per month after a major funder withdraws support. Events like this now play a critical role in sustaining operations.
Expect costumes, coffee and community
The promenade will fill with dogs of all shapes and sizes, many dressed in playful outfits. Expect creative looks, from tutus to themed costumes, alongside owners joining in the fun.
You can also enjoy coffee, food stalls, crafts and raffle prizes on the day. The first 100 dogs receive a free goodie bag.
Even if you do not have a dog, you can still take part. A small number of rescue dogs will be available for a sponsored walk, offering a chance to support and connect with animals in need.
Event details
Tickets cost R50 per person, R50 per dog and R25 for children under 12. You can buy tickets online via Quicket or at the venue from 8:30am on the day.
Participants are encouraged to dress up or wear orange in support of the Mdzananda brand.
