Every Mandela Day, South Africans are encouraged to dedicate 67 minutes to community service in honour of Madiba’s 67 years of fighting for social justice. This year, animal welfare organisations across Cape Town are offering meaningful ways to extend that spirit of kindness to the city’s four-legged residents.
Support the Animal Anti-Cruelty League‘s 67 Acts of Kindness
The Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) Cape Town is helping animals and pet owners in vulnerable communities through its 67 Acts of Kindness campaign.
Donations help provide food, veterinary care and essential support for pets in need.
Donation options include:
- R67: Contributes towards a food parcel for an animal in need.
- R670: Provides an essential care package, including veterinary support, preventative care and a food parcel.
- R6,700: Enables businesses to support the care of multiple animals and make a broader community impact.
Supporters can contribute through the AACL’s 67 Acts of Kindness campaign.
Paint a kennel at the Dogbox Project
CapeGate Shopping Centre’s annual Dogbox Project returns for its 14th year, continuing a Mandela Day tradition that began in 2012.
The initiative provides safe, weatherproof kennels for dogs at animal shelters across the Western Cape.
Volunteers are invited to help paint 67 kennels before they are donated.

Help provide kennels in Khayelitsha
Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter has partnered with FOUR PAWS South Africa to improve the lives of community dogs in Khayelitsha this winter.
As part of its Mandela Day initiative, the organisations will distribute 67 kennels and more than 670 care packs, providing shelter and essential supplies to dogs in the community.
In total, 134 dogs will receive new kennels.
Members of the public are invited to visit the organisation and see the initiative in action while helping make a meaningful difference.
Find your Mandela Match with Oscars Arc
Those looking to support a rescue dog can take part in Oscars Arc’s Mandela Match campaign.
Visitors can meet rescue dogs in person at Nobel Square at the V&A Waterfront on Saturday and sponsor a dog’s journey from the shelter to a forever home.
Those unable to attend can sponsor a dog online for R670 by using the reference “MANDELA DAY” followed by the dog’s name.
