After weeks of evading rescuers and capturing the hearts of golfers, staff, nearby residents and animal lovers, a frightened dog that had been roaming the Royal Cape Golf Club has finally been brought to safety.
The dog, now affectionately named Royalty, was rescued in the early hours of the morning following a carefully planned operation involving the Animal Welfare Society team and staff at the Royal Cape Golf Club.
Weeks of planning lead to successful rescue
For several weeks, Royalty had been spotted running across the golf course, prompting numerous sightings from the public and rescue efforts by several organisations.
Although Royalty has an owner, there has reportedly been very little involvement in helping to secure her safe rescue.
The Animal Welfare Society said it will be investigating her circumstances further.
Humane rescue operation
Determined to bring Royalty to safety, rescuers worked closely with the staff at Royal Cape Golf Club to develop a humane rescue plan.
A specially designed dog trap was installed, and members of the public were asked to keep their distance to give the frightened dog the confidence to approach it without fear.
After weeks of patience and teamwork, the rescue was successfully completed.
Royalty was transported to the Animal Welfare Society’s hospital for a full medical assessment.
Royalty begins treatment
Veterinary examinations revealed that Royalty is suffering from tick bite fever.
She has already started treatment and is receiving the medical care she urgently needs.
Despite everything she has endured, rescuers described her as gentle, affectionate and incredibly sweet.
‘She was simply terrified’
The Animal Welfare Society said Royalty’s behaviour reflected fear rather than aggression.
“She was never aggressive or ‘wild’. She was simply terrified, exhausted, and unsure of who she could trust after weeks of surviving on her own.”
The organisation said Royalty is now surrounded by people committed to helping her recover both physically and emotionally.
A brighter future ahead
While Royalty’s journey is only beginning, the Animal Welfare Society said it remains committed to providing her with the love, medical treatment and compassionate care she deserves while continuing to investigate her situation and plan for her future.
The organisation also promised to share updates on Royalty’s recovery as she learns to trust again.
“Her days of running are over, and her journey toward hope, healing, and a brighter future has finally begun.”
