Cape Town storm devastates animal welfare hospital as urgent appeal launched

A powerful storm sweeping across Cape Town has caused severe damage to the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa, flooding hospital facilities and destroying critical food supplies meant for vulnerable animals.

Heavy rain and strong winds battered the organisation’s property overnight, leaving sections of its veterinary hospital and storage facilities waterlogged.

According to the organisation, large quantities of donated animal food intended for:

  • hospital patients
  • rescue animals
  • and pets awaiting adoption

have been extensively damaged.

Rescue teams continue working through dangerous conditions

Despite the destruction, emergency teams have continued operating throughout the storm crisis.

Staff members have reportedly been:

  • assisting distressed families and pets
  • caring for abandoned animals
  • treating emergency veterinary cases
  • attempting to contain flood damage
  • protecting animals from worsening weather conditions

“Our teams are exhausted, but we refuse to stop helping animals in need,” the organisation said in an urgent public appeal.

Urgent donations needed for animals affected by storm

The Animal Welfare Society is now calling on the public to assist with emergency relief efforts.

The organisation urgently needs:

  • dog food
  • cat food
  • bird food
  • rabbit food
  • blankets
  • towels
  • metal feeding bowls
  • cat litter trays
  • cat litter

Officials warned that ongoing rain and damp conditions are making it increasingly difficult to keep animals warm and dry.

The appeal comes as severe weather continues causing disruption across Cape Town and the broader Western Cape.

Authorities remain on high alert as heavy rain, flooding and strong winds continue impacting:

  • animal shelters
  • and public infrastructure

The organisation says every donation will directly support ongoing rescue operations and help care for animals affected by the disaster.
