Rooibos is naturally caffeine-free, packed with antioxidants and proudly South African. If you’ve ever wondered whether your dog or cat can enjoy some too, the answer is yes, in moderation.
According to the South African Rooibos Council (SARC), plain Rooibos is safe for dogs and safe in small amounts for many cats. It also offers several potential health and skincare benefits when used correctly.
Simple ways to use Rooibos for your pet
SARC recommends these easy, pet-friendly uses at home.
Soothe itchy skin
Brew a strong cup of plain Rooibos and allow it to cool completely.
Use it as a final rinse after bathing to help calm dry or itchy skin. You can also pour the cooled Rooibos into a spray bottle and lightly mist irritated areas such as eczema patches, rashes, sunburn or itchy skin.
Store the mixture in the refrigerator and use it within two to three days.
Calm irritated paws
If your pet has sore or irritated paws, soak them in cooled Rooibos for 30 to 60 seconds.
Gently clean around the eyes
Moisten a cotton pad with cooled Rooibos and gently wipe around, not inside, irritated eyes.
Add it to meals
Mix a few tablespoons of cooled Rooibos into your pet’s dry food as a simple meal topper.
Encourage hydration
Dilute cooled Rooibos with water and add it to your pet’s water bowl for a refreshing alternative.
Always serve plain Rooibos
“Always ensure the tisane is plain (no sugar, milk or flavourings) and introduce it gradually. If your pet has a medical condition, check with your veterinarian first,” advises the South African Rooibos Council.
When you should avoid Rooibos
SARC advises against giving Rooibos to pets if they:
• Have a history of calcium oxalate bladder stones, as Rooibos contains small amounts of oxalates.
• Have kidney or liver disease.
• Are pregnant, nursing or younger than 12 weeks old.
• Are taking antihistamines, diuretics or other medication that could interact with antioxidants.
Speak to your veterinarian first
While Rooibos is considered a gentle herbal infusion, every pet is different.
Always speak to your veterinarian before introducing any new food, drink or skincare product, particularly if your pet has an existing medical condition or takes medication.
