KwaZulu-Natal is surprisingly perfect for it. Sea air, shade, river paths and loads of spots where dogs are not just tolerated but welcome.
Fig Tree Farm, Hillcrest
Located in the rolling greenery of Hillcrest, Fig Tree Farm is a 43-ha destination blending natural beauty, history, community and family-friendly experiences. For just R20 per car, you’ll have access to their dog-friendly paths. Throughout the year, Fig Tree Farm hosts a calendar of vibrant events, from live music and markets to community gatherings and seasonal festivities.
Giba Gorge MTB Park, Pinetown
Giba Gorge MTB Park in Pinetown allows dogs on leashes across its 45km trail network. Two popular designated dog-friendly options are the shady Beech Trail and the Lake Walk Trail. It costs R50 per runner/visitor, and it’s open daily from 7am to 5pm. Plus, you can grab a cuppa at Giba Graze.
Kloof and Highway SPCA, Kloof
The Kloof and Highway SPCA has some of the most beautiful trails either for running or walking your dogs. From beautiful forests to a stunning waterfall, you can take your pick of four different coloured routes. All routes are clearly sign posted with coloured arrows. Plus, you can grab coffee and brekkie at the tea garden. There is no fee, but there are zapper signs in strategic places where you can make a donation that will be greatly appreciated.
Virginia Bush Loop, Durban North
Virginia Bush is perfectly situated in the leafy suburb of Durban North. The Virginia Bush Nature Reserve offers excellent walking trails suitable for both beginners and experienced walkers. Providing a peaceful natural environment, it is the perfect spot to take a relaxing stroll surrounded by indigenous coastal forest, enjoy some bird watching, or walk with your pooch. Plus, it’s completely free to enter!
Zinkwazi Forest Trails, Zinkwazi Beach
Discover the natural beauty of Zinkwazi along its well-kept paths. As you hike through varying terrains, from dense vegetation to serene mangrove areas that lead to breathtaking ocean views, you’ll come across a variety of local wildlife, including rare birds and buck. This trail is excellent for hiking, and it’s unlikely you’ll encounter many other people while exploring. Dogs are welcome (and it’s free for you and your pup) and may even be off-leash in certain areas.
