Mdzananda sterilises 497 dogs in six weeks during Khayelitsha campaign

Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter has sterilised 497 dogs in six weeks as it works towards its target of 1,000 sterilisations.

The mass sterilisation campaign began in mid-June and runs alongside the clinic’s daily sterilisation programme at its on-site operating theatre.

The campaign aims to address pet overpopulation in Khayelitsha and surrounding communities.

Khayelitsha’s growing pet population

An estimated 300,000 dogs and cats live in Khayelitsha, with the number continuing to increase as the human population grows.

Without widespread sterilisation, unwanted litters place pressure on families, communities, animal welfare organisations and limited resources.

“Sterilisation is one of the most effective and humane ways to reduce animal suffering. It prevents unwanted litters, decreases the number of animals that face abandonment, neglect and abuse, and contributes to healthier pets and safer communities,” says Marcelle du Plessis, Fundraising and Communications Executive.

“Sterilised animals are also less likely to roam, fight, or contract certain diseases, improving their overall welfare and reducing the burden on owners.”

Clinic marks 30 years in Khayelitsha

Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter is celebrating 30 years of serving the community.

It is the only non-profit veterinary clinic serving Khayelitsha and surrounding areas and provides affordable veterinary care to thousands of pets each year.

“Poverty in our community means that private veterinary care is simply out of reach for many families,” says du Plessis. “Our community loves their animals and wants the best for them, but they rely heavily on our services to keep their pets healthy and to prevent unwanted litters.”

Public asked to sponsor sterilisations

Mdzananda is calling on the public to help fund the remaining procedures needed to reach its target.

A donation of R200 will sponsor one sterilisation.

“One sterilisation doesn’t only change one animal’s life,” says du Plessis. “It prevents generations of unwanted puppies and kittens from being born into difficult circumstances. By choosing to sponsor a sterilisation instead of one meal out, supporters can make an extraordinary and lasting impact.”

The organisation hopes the campaign will create lasting change for animals, pet owners and the wider Khayelitsha community.
