For Stefan van der Westhuizen, the journey into the world of rabbits began with love and grew into something far greater than expected.
Today, a Customer Development Manager for a Netherlands-based recruitment company, Stefan’s passion started years ago alongside his former fiancée, Caitlin. The pair adopted two rabbits with little knowledge of proper care. That led them to Noordhoek Bunny Rescue, a visit that shifted everything.
What began as curiosity quickly became commitment. They started volunteering and later launched their own rescue, Butterfly Bunnies. Although their paths eventually diverged, with Caitlin going on to establish Hop Haven, Stefan continues to carry forward the compassion that shaped his journey.
“What started as curiosity quickly turned into a lifelong commitment to rabbits in need,” he says.

Meet the boys who changed everything
At the centre of Stefan’s story are two rabbits, Benji and Bailey, who both celebrate their birthdays on 1 April.
Benji
Breed: Cinnamon
Age: 5 years
Sex: Male
Benji was born in a rescue and joined Stefan’s life as a young rabbit. Calm and gentle, he spends most of his time eating hay or resting. His quiet presence brings balance and comfort.

Bailey
Breed: Cinnamon
Age: 7 years
Sex: Male
Bailey has a strong personality. Rescued from Noordhoek Bunny Rescue, he quickly became the more mischievous of the two. He loves treats and attention, and if those are delayed, he makes his feelings known by chewing through toys with enthusiasm.
A life of comfort and care
Benji and Bailey now live at Hug-a-Bun Hotel, where they enjoy a safe and enriched environment. They have their own space while still having the freedom to roam and spend time outdoors.
For Stefan, their wellbeing is a priority.
“They have immediate access to trained professionals, and there’s always an exotic vet nearby in case of emergencies,” he explains. “They receive regular treats, a balanced diet, and yearly check-ups, including dental care, weigh-ins and x-rays.”

Meaning beyond material things
Stefan recently marked their birthday with a gesture that reflects both love and purpose. He purchased an A1 oil-on-canvas artwork by a Franschhoek artist, along with three smaller pieces, and donated the equivalent value to charity.
In a symbolic sense, his rabbits now “own” more than R70,000 worth of artwork. He also bought them a Rolex watch, not for its price, but for what it represents.
“It’s not about the price. It’s about what it represents,” he says.

A bond that continues to grow
Due to a demanding career and frequent travel, Stefan does not always spend as much time with Benji and Bailey as he would like. That makes each moment count.
“Every second I spend with them is irreplaceable,” he says. “When I walk into their room, I’m reminded of where my journey began.”
Looking back, he reflects on how much has changed.
“I couldn’t give them much a few years ago. Today, I would give them the world.”
In many ways, he already has.
