A severely neglected pony who arrived at the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa fighting for his life has made a remarkable recovery and found a loving forever home.
Rafiqi was rescued in a heartbreaking condition after enduring extreme hardship, carrying heavy loads in intense heat while suffering from severe neglect.
A desperate fight for survival
When Rafiqi arrived at the Animal Welfare Society of SA’s animal hospital, he was emaciated, exhausted and struggling to remain on his feet.
One of his most serious injuries was a large, severely infected wound on the side of his face that required immediate veterinary treatment.
Broken in both body and spirit, the frail pony had lost the will to fight.
Intensive care begins
The veterinary team immediately carried out a comprehensive medical assessment before beginning intensive treatment.
Rafiqi received medication, daily wound care, pain management and a carefully balanced nutritional plan to help restore his health.
