Rescued canal dog Moonlight finds her forever home

More than a year after her dramatic rescue from the Liesbeek River canal, Moonlight has found the happy ending everyone hoped for.

The husky-collie cross, whose rescue captured the hearts of animal lovers, has been adopted into a loving family and is now enjoying the life she always deserved.

A remarkable rescue

Moonlight’s journey began on 13 January 2025, when the Animal Welfare Society of SA‘s inspectorate team rescued her from the Liesbeek River canal and transported her to its kennels.

Frightened, underweight and unsure of the world around her, she slowly recovered with the care, patience and compassion of the staff.

A family who never forgot

Among those following Moonlight’s story was a family who quietly hoped they would one day be able to adopt her.

That dream came true on 16 June 2026 when Moonlight officially joined her forever home.

“Moonlight’s Facebook post pulled on our heartstrings when we realized she was the same dog rescued from our local canal in January last year. Her friendly face reminded us of our beloved Africanus, whom we had lost in March. We decided to meet her, and while she was a little aloof at first, everything changed when she met our dogs, Elektra and Porsche. Her playful personality immediately came to life, and we knew she belonged with us.”

Learning to trust again

Moonlight was initially nervous in her new surroundings and reluctant to enter the house.

With gentle encouragement, familiar routines and plenty of love, she gradually gained confidence.

Before long, she was exploring her new home, relaxing on the couch and enjoying the comforts of family life.

A new name for a new beginning

Her new family has renamed her Miura, inspired by the iconic Italian sports car.

Just like her namesake, Miura quickly raced into their hearts and became an irreplaceable member of the family.

A second chance at life

From her rescue in the canal to finding a loving home, Moonlight’s story highlights the difference that rescue, patience and compassion can make.

Today, Moonlight, now Miura, is safe, cherished, deeply loved and finally home.
