For months, Seun waited.
At just three years old, the crossbreed spent day after day watching other dogs leave for their forever homes while he remained behind at the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa.
A difficult start
Seun arrived at the shelter in November 2024 after being rescued from a hoarding environment. It was a space defined by neglect, where basic care was absent and survival came first.
Despite this, his temperament remained calm and gentle.
“He was in a very horrible condition,” says Shannon-Lee Beukes. “There was one dog with him that had pups who was extremely sick and no medication helped. All the puppies were adopted.”
The long wait
At the shelter, Seun became one of the long-staying residents.
He watched as others were chosen. Kennel doors opened. Leads clipped on. Families arrived and left with new companions. Through each moment, he waited quietly.
His presence became familiar. Steady. Patient.
He never stopped responding with kindness, even as the days passed.

The moment everything changed
Then, on 22 February, his story shifted.
After months of waiting, Seun was chosen by a family from Durbanville. A moment that marked the end of uncertainty and the beginning of something new.
“Seun finally found his forever family,” Beukes says. “He found a place where he is safe, cherished and truly seen.”
A story of resilience
Seun’s journey reflects hardship, but also resilience.
His story carries a simple message. Some dogs wait longer than others. Yet those longer waits often lead to meaningful matches and lasting homes.
For the many animals still waiting in shelters, his story offers a sense of possibility.
A new beginning
Seun’s life now moves forward in a space defined by care and stability.
The long wait has ended. What remains is a new chapter shaped by the kind of home he always deserved.
