Weasel the 15-Year-Old Golden Retriever Becomes the ‘Pawlates King’

A 15-year-old golden retriever named Weasel is tackling Pilates equipment after losing mobility, particularly in his hind legs, according to his owner, Pilates instructor Jillian Loustauna.

Loustauna, who owns Movmint in O’ahu, Hawaii, shared an Instagram Reel showing Weasel working on balance and stability. She says his daily exercises have helped him regain movement and brought back his personality.

Veterinary Rehabilitation Inspired the Pilates Approach

Loustauna said Weasel began losing mobility in May. She sought help from a veterinary practitioner specialising in acupuncture and physical therapy.

“I took him to a DVM who specialises in acupuncture and PT and noticed a lot of similarities with his rehab exercises and the movement I teach to humans every day.”

Her experience as a Pilates instructor prompted her to explore the connection. She also recalled reading about Joseph Pilates studying cats while developing Contrology.

Loustauna then introduced Weasel to equipment in her studios.

“I brought him to my studios and started him on the reformer – then the Cadillac, Chair CoreAlign and ladder barrel and the rest is history! I’m still in awe of how much he enjoys using these machines and how much they are actually helping him,” she continued.

The Instagram Reel of Weasel’s exercises shows him performing balance and stability work on a Pilates reformer.

Loustauna Reports Progress in Movement and Personality

According to Loustauna, Weasel has regained much of his function through daily practice and continues to make progress each week.

For her, the change extends beyond his movement. She says his personality has returned too.

“Going from such an active pup to barely being able to move was so hard on him. I am so grateful to have the resources and knowledge to give him his best quality of life.”

Weasel’s Progress Leads to Pawlates 101

Weasel’s experience inspired Loustauna to launch Pawlates 101, a virtual class for owners whose ageing dogs face similar mobility difficulties.

The class features simple movements intended to support dogs’ wellbeing at home.

“I am fortunate to be able dedicate time each day to helping Weasel heal and have created a virtual class to help other dog parents facing similar issues. Pawlates 101 covers simple moves you can do at home to make a big difference in your pup’s wellbeing.”

For Loustauna, Weasel’s progress is measured in both movement and the return of his familiar personality. His daily sessions have become a way for her to support him as he approaches his 16th birthday.
