FOUR PAWS Mobilises Communities to Report Big Cat Exploitation

Ahead of World Wildlife Day on 03 March, FOUR PAWS is calling on South Africans to take action against the exploitation of big cats.

Unethical breeding, commercial trading and harmful tourist interactions continue to place lions, tigers and other big cats at risk. The organisation says public participation is critical to ending these practices.

Part of the #BreakTheViciousCycle campaign

The call to action forms part of FOUR PAWS’ #BreakTheViciousCycle campaign, which seeks to end the exploitation of big cats in captivity and promote ethical wildlife practices.

Fiona Miles, Director of FOUR PAWS South Africa, says community reporting strengthens advocacy efforts.

“Your voice can help end the suffering of big cats. Every report provides information that supports awareness, stronger protections and legislative reform,” she says.

Use the big cat reporting tool

FOUR PAWS has developed an online reporting tool that enables members of the public to flag suspected exploitation.

Cases that should be reported include:

• Captive breeding for profit
• Cub petting or photo opportunities
• Unethical wildlife tourism activities
• Illegal trade or transport of big cats

How to report

• Visit the FOUR PAWS big cat reporting tool online
• Provide details of what you observed, including location and supporting photos or videos where possible
• Submit anonymously or include your contact details

All information is handled with respect for privacy.

Report cruelty to authorities

FOUR PAWS advises that animal cruelty cases should also be reported to the South African Police Service and the NSPCA Wildlife Protection Unit.

By collecting data and encouraging public vigilance, FOUR PAWS aims to strengthen advocacy campaigns and support policy change that protects big cats from exploitation.
