The Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter in Khayelitsha has launched a major sterilisation campaign aimed at reducing the number of unwanted puppies and kittens in the community.
Through the initiative, an additional 1 000 dogs and cats will be sterilised, adding to the approximately 3 000 procedures the organisation already performs each year in Khayelitsha and surrounding areas.
Improving animal welfare
Pet sterilisation is one of the most effective ways to combat animal overpopulation, reduce the spread of disease and prevent the suffering of animals born into circumstances where adequate care cannot be provided.
It also offers significant health benefits, including reducing the risk of certain cancers and infections.
“We are thrilled to roll out this campaign and make a meaningful difference in the lives of pets and the families who care for them,” says Marcelle du Plessis, Fundraising and Communications Executive at Mdzananda.
“Over the past few months, we have been registering pets for the programme while educating community members about the importance and benefits of sterilisation.”
Help fund 1 000 sterilisations
A generous grant from a donor foundation will cover all veterinary costs associated with the procedures.
However, Mdzananda still needs to raise R200 000 to fund medication, surgical supplies and other consumables required for the surgeries.
The organisation is calling on 1 000 supporters to donate R200 each to sponsor one sterilisation.
“R200 is often what people spend on a single meal at a restaurant,” says du Plessis.
“We invite animal lovers to give up one meal out and instead invest in a sterilisation that will have a lasting impact on animal welfare. Together, we can create a healthier and more sustainable future for pets in Khayelitsha.”

Supporting the Khayelitsha community
For 30 years, Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter has provided essential veterinary and animal welfare services to the Khayelitsha community.
The organisation assists up to 1,500 animals every month through its veterinary hospital, surgical theatre, shelter, mobile clinics, animal ambulance service and ongoing education programmes that promote responsible pet ownership.
