Why Liver Treats Stay a Dog Favourite

By Nikki Kim

For dog owners, liver treats sit high on the reward list. One rustle of the bag and your dog appears instantly. Beyond the strong aroma and taste, liver treats deliver real nutritional value, which explains why pet owners keep choosing them.

Why Pet Owners Choose Liver Treats

Over the past 20 years, dog owners have shifted toward natural treats. Many want options with fewer additives and clearer ingredient lists. Organ meats, especially liver, fit well with this move.

Liver treats smell rich and savoury. Dogs respond fast to the scent. The appeal feels instinctive, which makes liver ideal for training, rewards, and enrichment.

The Nutritional Value of Liver

Liver delivers concentrated nutrition. It provides protein, fatty acids, and a wide range of vitamins and minerals.

Liver ranks among the richest natural sources of vitamin A. Chicken, beef, pork, and lamb liver contain all eight B vitamins. These support energy metabolism, skin health, and nerve function.

Minerals also feature strongly. Liver supplies iron, copper, phosphorus, selenium, and zinc. Together, these nutrients support immune health, oxygen transport, and muscle function.

Used correctly, liver treats support a balanced diet without relying on supplements.

Why Moderation Matters

Liver offers benefits, but portion control matters.

Vitamin A is fat-soluble. Excess intake leads to accumulation in the body, which raises the risk of toxicity over time. Dehydrated liver increases this risk because nutrients become more concentrated during drying.

For example, 100g of raw liver yields around 30g of dried liver. Small dogs feel the impact faster. Overfeeding may lead to digestive upset or nutrient imbalance.

How to Feed Liver Treats Safely

Liver treats work best as an occasional supplement.

Follow feeding guidelines from the treat manufacturer. These include age, size, and calorie needs. A common guideline suggests that treats should not exceed 10 per cent of daily calorie intake based on ideal body weight.

If you feel unsure, ask your vet for guidance before adjusting treat portions.

Creative Ways to Use Liver Treats

Liver treats support training and enrichment when used thoughtfully.

Try these ideas:
Break the dehydrated liver into small pieces for training. Smaller dogs need smaller rewards.
• Sprinkle a light dusting of liver powder over puppy kibble.
• Hide small liver treats inside puzzle toys or treat balls.
• Add liver powder to meals for picky eaters.
• Mix liver powder with plain yoghurt and spread over a lick mat.
• Save liver treats for special occasions or bake them into dog-friendly biscuits.

Homemade Liver Bite Biscuits

  3. Beat egg and olive oil together. Add water and mix well.
  4. Add liquid to dry ingredients and stir until smooth.
  5. Spread batter evenly to about 0.5cm thick.
  6. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove and score into 2cm squares. Cool for 5 minutes.
  7. Separate the squares and return to the oven for 15 minutes, until firmer.

Storage Tips
• Cut into smaller squares for training treats.
• Leave biscuits in a switched-off oven for a firmer texture.
